Many people even recommend cleaning the hull once every 3 months as well.Ĭleaning the hull includes either taking it out of the water and power-washing/scrubbing or underwater scrubbing. This includes power washing and painting the hulls with anti-foul paint. Many boats that spend their life in seawater are anti-fouled at least once a year to avoid these damages. Some damages that barnacles can cause include: ![]() Sometimes you may even have to repaint your bottom paint if it’s too bad. The longer you let the barnacles grow, the more damage they will cause when you clean them off. Damage hull surfacesīarnacles can cause gel coat and paint damage when you clean them off. – JOSHUA SAULīiofouling describes barnacles and other marine organism growth on marine vessels. Naval Academy estimates that biofouling creates enough hull-drag to increase the Navy’s petroleum bill by about $250 million every year. And to reach cruising speed, it will require much more RPMs out of the engine, meaning more fuel will be used, and the engine will age quicker. This can lead to a variety of problems, including:Ī boat that is fully covered in barnacles will experience a speed reduction of up to 60% of its original speed. The more barnacles that connect to your hull, the more drag your boat will have against water. #ON OFF HULL CLEANER FULL#Below I explain each and every one of them in full detail: Increased drag Including increased drag and corrosion, there are many other issues barnacles cause to your boat. Re the original post about cleaning, for the 14 years I've had ski boats, I've had to do some serious cleaning after each season when the Murray River has left awful brown stains in the gelcoat. Seems to be little practical evidence of problems with those products. If there was any, significant deteriment in using these products, there would surely be a swathe of examples posted here of damage to boats. Clearly there are myriad owners who use all manner of automotive waxes on some very well looked after, expensive boats and there do not seem to be any horror stories. I used automotive polish and wax products a few times on my old Gilflite with no ill effect. He gave me some of the commercial fibreglass polish that he uses and it was effective but hard work. His philosophy is definitely not to use automotive type waxes and polishes on gelcoat. I spoke a year or so ago to a bloke who runs a boat maintenace facility and who does a lot of fibreglass repair work. ![]()
